Assisted Living And Memory Care

  • Assisted Living
Sometimes, older people need assistance with activities of daily living. Activities of daily living (ADL) include, eating, getting around in one's home, dressing, and bathing. The assistance you need may not require the round-the-clock, skilled health care a nursing home provides, yet your needs cannot be met living by yourself.

Assisted living residences are designed to meet special personal-service and housing needs, and often health care needs as well. Choices vary from single or double rooms to suites or apartments. Assisted living residences, also include Personal Care, Residential Care, or Domiciliary Care, or may be part of a retirement community, nursing home, elderly housing, or they may stand alone. The goal of assisted living is to help you continue living as independently as possible, under a "social care" model.
  • Memory Care
Although many Assisted Living communities and Nursing Homes cater to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other related memory disorders or dementia, there is a growing trend towards facilities that provide specialized care and housing tailored to the special needs of individuals with this disease.
These facilities offer care that fosters residents' individual skills and interests in an environment that helps to diminish confusion and agitation. Specialty services are provided in a secure environment, such as activity programs designed to include reality orientation classes and specially trained professional staff skilled in handling the behavior associated with memory impairments. Many facilities that specialize in Alzheimer's or related dementia disorders have building design features that assist with the problems associated with this disease: color-coded hallways, visual cues, and secure wandering paths for additional security.
